Effective on the date and time above, all the NRY GPROF data product verson  numbers were changed by increasing the letter of the data product version. This letter change means that data products were changed but no backward processing is undertaken. Only the products forward of the date/time have been altered.  So, for GMI GPROF the vesion changed from V05A to V05B. Other instrument GPROF retrievals had a similar change but appropriate to their starting data product version.

The algorithm itself did not change but some of the database profiles did. The algorithm team provided the following information:

A monthly emissivity class file is used within the surface type assignment to define the GPROF surface class and thus select similar database profiles.  While examining IMERG data in a new polar stereographic projection, many areas of erroneous  precipitation (very high precipitation rates) were observed.   This was found to be  caused by incomplete and incorrect assignment of the surface type in Northern Canada  and Greenland.   Using an Autosnow created climatology, these surface types were  changed in the GPROF ancillary files to a new snow class, instead of a open water classification.  The result greatly reduced the retrievals of anomalous high precipitation, and occur only over the areas highlighted in the following figure.  Precipitation retrievals in ALL other areas are not affected.  


The Precipitation Processing System (PPS) is scheduled to begin TRMM L2-L3 Combined GPM V06A data reprocessing on Wednesday October 31, 2018.

PPS is announcing the availability of the new NOAA20_ATMS products which will be available starting today, Tuesday September 04, 2018

The NOAA20_ATMS data range starts with November 29, 2017 and will be processed to the current date.  November/December 2017 products will be available this afternoon.

The corresponding PPS TKIO to be used with this data is tkio 3.80.26:

For the period 03Z August 21 to 16Z August 22, the IMERG real time system experienced an outage of CPC 4-km IR data.  Despite the outage, IMERG EARLY and LATE products continued to be produced but users should be aware that the quality of these products during this period may be suspect and should be used judiciously.  Furthermore, the products for the first few hours after the outage are less than optimal due to IMERG restart but should be acceptable for most users.

Detailed Impacts:

(1) The precipitation propagation vectors for the period slowly degraded after 03Z August 21 due to the missing CPC 4-km even-odd IR files.  Mechanisms are in place to extrapolate motion vectors into the future in case of brief IR outages but will degrade quickly if the outage is beyond a few hours.

(2) As IR precipitation estimates were unavailable for the outage period, microwave estimates propagated beyond ±90 minutes were used as is.  Normally, IR precipitation is weighted in the final precipitation products outside the ±90 minute window (precipitationCal and precipitationUncal). 


L1C NPP ATMS intercalibration table has been updated to account for the NPP ATMS SDR calibration update occurred on March 8, 2017.
As a result, PPS will change the L1C NPP ATMS product version to V05B. The downstream L2 - L3 product versions will also be advanced one letter
from V05C to V05D.

PPS is releasing version 3.80.44 build of the PPS TKIO toolkit using the 14.0.1 Fortran compiler for GPM. As detailed in our earlier announcement that you received on Thursday, June 28th, 2018, titled;

"PPS is Reprocessing TRMM PR Data as TRMM GPM, Version 06A HDF5 products in Early July 2018"

This is the version of the PPS I/O Toolkit that will be used for these radar products.

The TRMM Version 7 Precipitation Radar (PR) products will be superseded by new GPM era products with a reprocessing that will generate TRMM retrievals from the beginning of the TRMM mission to the end of data collection using a single frequency retrieval algorithm similar to that used for GPM Ku. This reprocessing will begin in early July, 2018.

Retrievals previously available in the TRMM Version 7 products 2A21, 2A23, 2A25, and 3A25 will be available in the new 2APR and 3PR products. Note that these new GPM era products are in HDF5 format and similar in structure to those used for GPM DPR products. Please see the TRMM HDF5 Primer <> for information on moving from TRMM Version 7 HDF4 products to TRMM GPM Version 06A HDF5  products. Many third party tools such as IDL and Matlab have native routines to read HDF5 data.

The Version of the PPS I/O Toolkit used will be TKIO 3.80.44 or later for these radar products.  A separate announcement will be sent for those using the TKIO to access the HDF data products. 

In order to synchronize processing versions with the upcoming GPM DPR
reprocessing (06A) the new TRMM radar products will also be Version V06A.

Note that PPS STORM data ordering is only applicable to the latest processing version and TRMM Version 7 data will be removed from STORM as new V06A HDF5 products are generated. TRMM Version 7 HDF4 products will continue to be available as well as the new HDF5 products at PPS by FTP ( The new TRMM HDF5 products can be found under the /gpmdata group as TRMM products are now considered part of GPM.

TRMM experienced extended data gaps due to the satellite altitude increase in 8/2001, the A to B hardware switch in 5-6/2009 and during the deorbit period in late 2014-2015.  For a listing of empty and partial granules in Version 7,  users can consult our PPS TRMM Anomalous Granule Table:

On Sunday June 17, 2018 PPS System Programmers and staff will be performing an important scheduled GPM archive server upgrade.

Due to this upgrade process, most PPS systems and services will be unavailable for most or all of that day starting at 9:00 AM (EDT) and lasting until late afternoon or longer depending upon the upgrade circumstances.
