2014 Master Teachers: Dr. Rose Bulau
"This is my 26th year teaching, and I love it just as much today as I did when I started! Currently, I teach 4th and 5th grade (looping). I have looped several times and I LOVE IT! One of the most important aspects of this career is the connections made with students and families - and that is why looping is perfect for me.
Over the past ten years or so, I have kind of "fallen into" science. I was awarded a slot in the Mickelson-Exxon Mobil Teacher Academy and loved everything I learned there. Then, I was given an opportunity to be one of the first teachers in our state to complete a science certification specifically for elementary teachers. This past summer, I gratefully accepted a scholarship from Honeywell to attend the teacher space academy in Huntsville, Alabama. These were all amazing experiences.
The truth is - I hated science in school! It was until I began teaching, with an amazing mentor teacher, that I learned the awesome truth about science! It is thrilling and fun and engaging and challenging, when you allow students the freedom to question, think, and explore. I have loved teaching science and have grown skilled at integrating it with other subjects. That's one reason I appreciate participating in the NASA programs.
In my spare time, I like to drive my motorcycle in the Georgia foothills, hike, read, and attend local theater performances."
