2014 Master Teachers: Katie Sard

7th & 8th Grade Science Teacher
Hello from Newport, Oregon! I am extremely thrilled and honored to be involved with the GPM Master Teachers program this year. I have the privilege of teaching an amazing group of 7th and 8th grade students here in Newport, and their curiosity and genuine interest in our natural world is what motivates me to continue my own science education through programs such as GPM Master Teachers.
In June of 2011, my husband and I moved to Oregon from Western New York State so that he could pursue his PhD at Hatfield Marine Science Center through Oregon State University. I was fortunate enough to find a teaching position through Lincoln County School District where I have been ever since. While being on the West Coast, I have been on a mission to discover all that I can about the Ocean in order to help my students appreciate what an amazing resource we have here in our backyard. During the summer of 2013, I spent three weeks on the NOAA Ship Rainier as a Teacher at Sea. This program opened my eyes to the world of marine research and helped me to provide real-world experiences and examples for my middle school students. I have also participated in a district-wide grant focused on project-based learning in STEM. I am eager to begin work with the GPM Master Teachers in hopes that I can continue to help build a world of scientifically literate citizens.
When I am not teaching I love to read and enjoy the great outdoors. I am fortunate enough to live close to the Pacific Ocean where I regularly enjoy walking with my dog Luna and my husband Nick.
