Data Access

On Tuesday, 20 January 2026, NASA's Precipitation Processing System (PPS) will temporarily shutdown the GPM Near Real-time (NRT) system at 18:00 EST (23:00 UTC). This is necessary to complete the move of data from the current high-speed storage system (not currently under maintenance) to the new storage system that is under maintenance. It will take approximately 14 hours to finalize the synchronization of the data from the old storage to the new one. During this 14 hours no new data will be produced or ingested. Department of Defense officials have reached an agreement to continue sharing DMSP SSMIS data until the sensor fails, or until the program formally ends (currently planned for September 2026). This decision puts off for now the impacts that the previously announced SSMIS shutdown would have had on the IMERG product.

It was announced on Monday, June 30, that NASA requested and it was agreed to postpone the removal of SSMIS data and to continue processing and distributing DMSP data through July 31.

Department of Defense (DOD) FNMOC has announced its intention to shut down the current flow of operational SSMIS data on 30 June 2025. This is much earlier than the earlier announced date of September 2026, and would suspend the use of F16, F17, and F18 SSMIS data in GPM PPS. We are vigorously pursuing alternatives for continuing access to SSMIS data, but it seems likely that there will be an interruption, and perhaps end, to the SSMIS data streams. The lack of these 3 conically scanning radiometers will impact the accuracy of all IMERG products as they will have data from 3 fewer radiometers

All PPS services have been restarted, tested and verified including GPM Production, STORM , Registration and the PPS website. On Friday January 31, 2025, PPS detected hardware issues with PPS's Production data archive "arthurhou". Because of reported file length discrepancies, PPS is suspending access to the the 'arthurhou' production data server until they can analyze and fully resolve these issues as soon as possible. All data archiving to 'arthurhou' will be turned off during this unscheduled maintenance period. GPM production data and PPS access systems such as STORM will NOT be available for processing during that time. The PPS has completed retroprocessing IMERG V07 products for Jan. 1, 1998 to May 31, 2000. Both the Early and Late standard HDF product and the GIS products are available on the "jsimpson" GPM near real-time file servers. Please visit our data directory for a full list of product downloads and documentation. With this retroprocessing now complete, IMERG V07 products are now available from January 1998 through the present.
