New Tool for Visualizing IMERG Data

ANNOUNCING a NEW IMERG Web Visualization Tool:

RAIN-Global (Regional Animations of IMERG in Near-realtime - Global Edition):
https://storm.pps.eosdis.nasa.gov/storm/outreach/RAIN-Global.html

RAIN-Global is the next-generation, 3D global, fully interactive upgrade to RAIN, a web interface that displays recent 7-day animations of precipitation rates and accumulations from IMERG-Late data, as well as cloudiness from geosynchronous IR data. Animations are updated daily for the 7-day period ending on the prior day and are available for the past 30 days.

New features include:

  • Use your mouse or trackpad to adjust the camera position and zoom level at any location on Earth dynamically while animations are playing.
  • Set the camera to orbit the Earth and visualize fully animated global precipitation data from an orbital perspective.
  • Use the controls to “Fly To” one of 13 regions or over 200 countries and capital cities.
  • Examine 7-day surface precipitation accumulation contours at 50-mm increments.
  • Adjust the appearance of the globe by toggling country borders, country/city labels, and legend.
  • Select performance characteristics (animation and renderer resolution and frame rate) to either enhance visual clarity or boost performance on older hardware/software.
  • Get auto-generated performance-enhancing tips.

RAIN-Global can be used to explore IMERG precipitation data for recent extreme weather events at a specific date and location of interest. It is also ideal for education and outreach purposes to illustrate the value of satellite-based estimations of precipitation. RAIN-Global runs on a variety of hardware/software setups, but runs best on modern hardware and in Chrome, Safari, or Edge browsers (compatibility in Firefox is limited).
