The GPM Core Observatory was assembled and tested at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt Maryland. Goddard is home to the nation's largest organization of combined scientists, engineers and technologists that build spacecraft, instruments and new technology to study the Earth, the sun, our solar system, and the universe.
Named for American rocketry pioneer Dr. Robert H. Goddard, the center was established in 1959 as NASA's first space flight complex. Goddard and its several facilities are critical in carrying out NASA's missions of space exploration and scientific discovery.
NASA's home page for the Earth Sciences, which study our ever-changing planet. NASA's Earth Science research encompasses:
- the global atmosphere
- the global oceans including sea ice
- land surfaces including snow and ice ecosystems
- interactions among the atmosphere, oceans, land and ecosystems, including humans
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is a United States federal agency focused on studying the condition of the oceans and the atmosphere. One of NOAA"s primary goals is to warn of dangerous weather, and NOAA works closely with NASA to achieve its goals of studying and charting our planet's atmosphere.
A specialized agency of the United Nations, the WMO promotes cooperation in the establishment of networks for making meteorological, climatological, hydrological and geophysical observations, as well as the exchange, processing and standardization of related data, and assists technology transfer, training and research.
