Document Description

The L3GPROF algorithm provides monthly and daily mean precipitation and related retrieved parameters from the Level 2 GPROF precipitation profiling algorithm for the GPM core and constellation satellites.

Each L3GPROF product contains global 0.25o x 0.25o gridded monthly/daily unconditional means and pixel counts. Monthly product filenames start with 3A-MO or 3A-CLIM-MO, and daily product filenames start with 3A-DAY or 3A-CLIM-DAY.

Document Description

This Level 3 GPROF Version 07 release involves the following changes from the previous
(Version 05) release:

1. Product format change:
Added dimension variables such as lat, lon, layer, lat_bnds, lon_bnds, layer_bnds. Removed
cloudIce variable but added graupel and latentHeating variables.
2. Total number of precipitation pixels (npixPrecipitation):
In Version 05, pixels with pixelStatus=0 and surfacePrecipitation > 0 are counted as
precipitation pixels. In Version 07, pixels with pixelStatus=0, surfacePrecipitation > 0 and

IMERG totals from twin cyclones in the Indian Ocean
Over the past several days, a relatively rare event occurred in the eastern Indian Ocean: the formation of “twin” tropical cyclones. Tropical Cylones Karim and Asani formed at nearly the exact same time (06:00 UTC and 06:30 UTC, 12:00 pm and 12:30 pm local time) on May 7 on opposite sides of the Equator. Karim officially formed first in the southern hemisphere (SH) followed immediately by Asani in the northern hemisphere (NH). At first glance, the cyclones appear to be mirror images of one another with Asani rotating counterclockwise in the NH and Karim rotating clockwise in the SH roughly

Upgrade to IMERG Early and Late Runs

The upgrade of GPROF and the Combined Radar-Radiometer Algorithm (CORRA) code to Version 07 as of 0 UTC on May 9, 2022, while IMERG continues at V06 until August, requires the Early and Late Runs to change slightly and be given the version number 06C. Specifically, the V07 GPROF and CORRA data must be used in V06 IMERG, and the GPCP climatological calibration has been recomputed to account for the change in CORRA. In addition, the GMI-other sensor calibrations will shift over the next month as V07 data are incorporated into the accumulation files. We expect the Early and Late time series to be
IMERG rainfall totals in South Africa, April 5 - 18, 2022.
An upper-level area of low pressure tapped into the warm waters of the South Indian Ocean to bring heavy rains and flooding to parts of South Africa during the second week of April. The event unfolded when an upper-level trough of low pressure embedded within the midlatitude westerlies traversed the southern part of Africa from west to east. As the trough approached the east coast of South Africa, an area of low pressure became detached from the main flow, this “cut off” low then drifted over the warm waters of the Agulhas Current, which channels warmer waters from the tropical Indian Ocean
